ed lloyd, social studies teacher, shares his amazing classroom success

Attending our training won’t mean that you instantly become a better person; it means that you have the tools to move forward and create the life of your dreams. If you choose not to use your tools they collect dust and nothing changes. However, when applied consistently you can not only improve your life – you may make a dramatic difference in the lives of others without realizing it.

February’s Closing Circle feature introduces you to an amazing Social Studies teacher, Mr. Ed Lloyd. Ed changes the lives of his students every day. Upon graduating from Leadership Breakthrough One, Ed went back to school ready to change the culture of his classroom. Ed has implemented nearly every anchor from the training into his classroom. Everyday he challenges himself to learn and grow more so that he can give more. Recently he called Rapport Leadership International to share the following story. At this school year’s open house, a parent of a child he had taught for a single semester last year approached him to tell him how much he had changed the life of her daughter and her own. Blown away, Ed listened to her story of her daughter’s transformation with tears in his eyes. The mother, Kevinia Frazer, later wrote him this letter which Ed wanted to share with us.

Dear Mr. Lloyd,

I would like to thank you for your excellent standards in teaching. My daughter Sairra attended your class last year. Sairra has dealt with ADD/ADHD and mild dyslexia her entire life. Throughout her academic career, I have seen many teachers push her through, or entirely ignore her learning disability all together. The long term affect of this led to Sairra having very low self-esteem, behavior problems (although I have consistently used behavior modification, with positive reinforcement) and a lack of interest in school.

That was until last year when she attended your class. You gave her confidence, and interest in her studies. You also gave her determination to set goals and achieve those goals. I transferred my daughter to a Charter school last year, mid-year where she would get more individualized teaching. During her interview she was asked what helped her learn, she stated "The way Mr. Lloyd taught class." and went on to explain what you did that made her want to learn. My daughter ended her eighth grade year with a 3.36 GPA! She had never earned more than a 1.8 GPA her entire academic career before this dramatic change. I am pleased that the charter gave her the overall individualized structure she needed, but I am thankful to you for giving her the tools that allowed her to define that structure.

Ninth grade is proving to be challenging for her, but she is not giving up. She is not losing her confidence. She continues to set herself goals and restructures her plan as needed. As a parent, I am very supportive, I give my 110% to each of my children, but I have never had a teacher confirm the positive attributes that Sairra has until you came into her life. Sairra has continued to become more confident, she has a sense of responsibility and a different outlook on learning... because you were in her life for one period a day for one semester.

If you ever need confirmation that you are truly teaching your students, please take my words as confirmation that not only are you teaching them to learn academics... you are teaching them life skills that are making a difference in their present and future.

Thank you, Mr. Lloyd, for giving my daughter invaluable life tools. You have not only made a difference in a child's life, you have made a difference in a parent’s life.

Sincerely,

Kevinia Frazer

Sairras Mom
