Linking Rapport training to Good to Great concepts

ClimberMONTHLY BOOK FEATURE:

Good to Great by Jim Collins

Jim Collins bestselling book, Good to Great, begins with a question: "How does a good company become a great company?" By setting strict standards, Jim and his research team first discovered 11 companies who made the transition from good to great, and then determined what these companies did differently to create sustained greatness. The answer came down to a surprising blend of leadership ability that mixed human performance and potential with the humility that comes from people working together to create something bigger than themselves.

Collin's labels one of the most compelling principals "First Who, Then What.” In the 11 organizations that made the leap from average to amazing, they began with the question of “who” they wanted on board before they decided “what” to accomplish. People proceeded strategy, vision, and direction. Once you have the right people on the bus in the right seats, and the wrong people off the bus, then make a decision together on where to drive the bus. Even the greatest vision produces mediocre results when the wrong people decide how to accomplish it. A successful organization develops from leaders at all levels who focus on the long term vision while taking action on immediate priorities.

During the research process it became evident that all the good to great companies were headed by a particular type of leader during the pivotal transformation years. Collins terms the leadership exhibited during these years “Level Five Leadership.” He characterizes Level Five Leadership as a paradoxical blend of personal humility and professional will. Level Five Leaders connect to a purpose that is greater than themselves, and drive the organization toward that goal while being open to feedback, receptive to new ideas, and willing to hold themselves strictly accountable.

Rapport Leadership International’s training programs are designed to maximize each individual’s potential by growing and uncovering their strengths as a Level Five Leader. Each participant learns how to influence others and connect to a greater purpose and vision. A guiding coalition committed to a common vision, open to feedback, fully accountable and passionate about their role in the business produces incredible results. When you develop the “right people” on your bus, the energy directed at achieving long and short term goals is explosive. With leadership fully capitalized, the business builds the momentum required to reach the next level and move from “goodnuf” to GREAT!
